SUMMARY:February 2025 Simulcast | Jenny Ives (remote): No is not a word in my vocabulary\, aka Creativity in Sewing
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Ives (remote): \nNo is not a word in my vocabulary\, aka Creativity in Sewing \nFebruary 8\, 2025: 10:30-noon PST\nCampbell Community Center Multipurpose room M50 \nJenny Ives is a Costume designer out of Seattle\, WA. She got started sewing as a small child\, growing up in a sewing family it was in her blood. In high school\, she found her love of vintage clothing. That was a pipeline to starting costuming in the theater and her ballet studio. She loved helping to create a beautiful world on the stage! She started doing cosplay in 2013\, cosplay was a new way to build her creativity. She expanded her sewing techniques and was inspired by all the other creators. In 2015 she discovered her love for competing in Cosplay Contests. It lit a fire in her to try so many new things. Making friends with these competitors drove her to be her best\, and drove her to challenge herself. She started making her designs of Superhero ballgowns. But designing was never enough. From there it was how to take things to the next level. What new skills could she learn? It started small\, sewing in fairy lights to make something glow. Currently\, she is making fully articulated wings. There is always a new way to draw her creativity forward. \n  \nThis is an hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. SUMMARY:January 2025 Webinar | Jaki Canterbury: Slow Fiber The Beginning (Zoom Only)
DESCRIPTION:Jacki Canterbury Webinar Slow Fiber: The beginning\n \nUsing conceptual art to jump the divide from fast fashion to artfully living an authentic life in my closet. \n  \nWant to know something I think about a lot when I’m not sewing or running my business? How the emerging markets around the globe- India\, China\, Indochina\, South and Central America and they’re growing middle class are are onboarding consumption habits like ours. I know that shopping equals environmental degradation. How selfish of me\, right? Here in the west\, we got our chance\, they want theirs and while we’re thinking about how to undo 400 years of colonial\, environmental rape in the US those places are ramping up their buying.\nIn 2017\, being the intuitive\, creative\, self-employed\, self-starter I am\, I realized that there was a smoke screen in the fashion industry. It had me\, hook line and sinker up until then too. I was going to really have to change my ways if I wanted to be part of a solution. \n \nBut what was the solution? Do you just stop buying clothes? Not likely. Do you only buy used? Not realistic. Share?…yuck. Do we make them? Well\, we used to\, but again\, not realistic. This work-hard-play- hard-defend-your-American-productivity- to-the-end-world that we share with others is hard to change. I am part of that paradigm. \nWe are fiercely independent. We own our own everything. My art and my garment thinking have been intersecting ever since. \n  \n  \nJanuary 11\, 2024: 10:30-noon PST PenWAG Zoom webinar This is a Zoom webinar\, free to all active PenWAG members. SUMMARY:December 2024 Simulcast | Carol Ziogas: Stitching the Sky
DESCRIPTION:December 2024 Simulcast | Carol Ziogas: Stitching the Sky\n\nStitching the Sky – History of Sashiko in pre 20th century Japan \nCarol Ziogas has been collecting vintage Japanese kimonos for more than 20 years ago.  She enriched her knowledge with extensive research\, learning the history\, and developing a love of traditional Japanese stitching.  Carol’s presentation will include a display of 19th and 20th century Japanese textiles including indigo\, shibori\, katazome\, kimono\, and sashiko pieces. \nIn Japan\, sashiko stitching was first applied to clothing out of a practical need and would have been used to strengthen the homespun clothes of the time.  Worn out clothes were pieced together to make new garments by using simple running stitches. After these garments wore out\, they would been used to layer thin fabrics to create warmth\, and\, in the case of some garments such as the coats of firemen\, to create a thick and absorbent material that would be soaked in water before carrying out duties as a fireman. \nCarol lives in Alameda\, CA and owns Kimonomomo\, which specializes in new and vintage Japanese textiles and sashiko supplies\, on Etsy. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n sashiko-sun\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n sashiko_grid_2\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \nDecember 14\, 2024: 10:30-noon PST\nSaratoga Senior Center \n19655 Allendale Avenue\, Saratoga\, CA 95070\n(Park at Civic Center) \nThis is a hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $10 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$10.00Read more	\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:April 13 Simulcast | Harriete Berman: Prestige\, Value\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:Harriete Berman: Prestige\, Value\, and Identity\nHarriete Estel Berman has been creating jewelry from post-consumer tin cans since 1988\, transforming mundane materials from the refuse of our consumer society into meaningful layers of social commentary. \nFamiliar images and patterns ranging from bar codes to brand name icons are ironically metamorphosed in her bracelets\, pins\, and earrings.  They explore the seduction of advertising and marketing that promotes brand recognition and loyalty as personal identification.  These materials are not as precious as gold or silver\, but in many ways reflect more accurately the values of our culture. \nIn the past few years\, Berman has expanded her repertoire of materials to use post-consumer plastic as an extraordinary environmental statement creating imaginative jewelry from even more unexpected materials. \nBerman’s jewelry was recently featured in a PBS program produced by Craft In America titled\, “Jewelry”.  \nThis is an hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $5 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$5.00Read more	\n \n \n

SUMMARY:December 2022 Meeting and Stash Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:Meeting and Stash Extravaganza\nScheduled to be our first in person stash Sale since 2019! Instead of a potluck\, coffee and snacks will be served starting at 9AM to members who bring items for the Stash Sale. \nWe will start with a BRIEF zoom meeting for the annual Board Election. \nWe will do our best to keep a session running in a corner of the space so local and remote members can mingle\, but that may prove unworkable. \nPlanned for live and Zoom simulcast \nThis is the PenWAG year-end holiday celebration. Besides sharing each others’ excellent company\, we get to raid an amazing collection of fabrics\, patterns\, and other supplies that members donate from their personal stashes\, and your donations at the Extravaganza help support all the non-profit activities of PenWAG (including our scholarship fund\, which provides scholarships to a high school and a college student trying to gain further education in a design career.). The more you donate\, the more PenWAG can do! \nNote: new location this year\, not the Campbell Community Center \nSaratoga Senior Center\, \n13777 Fruitvale Ave\, Saratoga \n\n  \n  \n

He combines the hand-woven\, hand-dyed\, and embroidered fabrics made by his family in Nigeria with other fabrics\, new and upcycled\, to create the uniquely designed clothing in his I.B.Bayo line.Bayo also teaches Nigerian Batik and Reverse Appliqué workshops\, and gives presentations on his family history\, showing clothing that spans from past generations to modern creations. \n\n \nThis program is free to all Active PenWAG members; registration and login information will be sent via electronic communications.\nNon-members may register to attend for a $5 contribution\, which may be paid via our online enrollment store.
