DESCRIPTION:Jenny Ives (remote): \nNo is not a word in my vocabulary\, aka Creativity in Sewing \nFebruary 8\, 2025: 10:30-noon PST\nCampbell Community Center Multipurpose room M50 \nJenny Ives is a Costume designer out of Seattle\, WA. She got started sewing as a small child\, growing up in a sewing family it was in her blood. In high school\, she found her love of vintage clothing. That was a pipeline to starting costuming in the theater and her ballet studio. She loved helping to create a beautiful world on the stage! She started doing cosplay in 2013\, cosplay was a new way to build her creativity. She expanded her sewing techniques and was inspired by all the other creators. In 2015 she discovered her love for competing in Cosplay Contests. It lit a fire in her to try so many new things. Making friends with these competitors drove her to be her best\, and drove her to challenge herself. She started making her designs of Superhero ballgowns. But designing was never enough. From there it was how to take things to the next level. What new skills could she learn? It started small\, sewing in fairy lights to make something glow. Currently\, she is making fully articulated wings. There is always a new way to draw her creativity forward. \n  \nThis is an hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. DESCRIPTION:Pamela Schneider\nExploring Lagenlook: Developing your own layered Wardrobe\nPamela’s area of interest is the Lagen or Layered look\, anywhere from the Bohemian voluminous\, floating layers. to a more contained androgynous look\, to the avant-garde look of designer Rundholz. Specifically\, she has developed her own take on Lagenlook and created a wardrobe using patterns from Tina Givens and other independent pattern designers. Overcoming obstacles in project construction is often her favorite part of the creative process.  Her diverse experiences directly influenced her artistic life\, where she has developed a playful yet distinctive style. \nPolymer clay is the main material that Lynn uses in her art jewelry.  Using a variety of other materials\, she develops simple elements using mark making\, textures\, and sgraffito techniques\, then she combines and layers them\, sometimes adding some wire to provide a depth of interest and a tactile quality. \nLynn’s presentation will include her journey to find her own voice and the unexpected consequences of saying YES!  The little and big steps along the way are equally important to move forward.  She hopes to encourage others to say yes and move forward in their journey. \n$10.00Read more

DESCRIPTION:Harriet Riddell Zoom Program:  Travels Around the World with a Sewing Machine – Art as a Means of Communication\nDemo:  Live Stitchery Portrait of our member Kevin Roche\n(Special extended program 10:30-1:00) \nwww.institchyou.com \nHarriet has traveled extensively\, taking with her a sewing machine and a table strapped to her back as she bicycles through groups of people.  Typically\, she will settle down within a local marketplace\, set up her sewing machine\, and create power through solar energy and by inviting villagers to pedal on her now-stationary bike in order to create power to use the sewing machine.  She will then select a subject of which she will create a portrait.  But this isn’t the usual charcoal sketching – the sketch is totally stitched on the sewing machine with no hard sketches preceding.  As she stitches\, she will carry on a conversation with her subject to draw out their interests which she will then incorporate into the stitching in some way.  She also frequently “sketches” scenes along the way\, such as a wedding\, or fishing village\, or an interesting local scene\, all powered by a bicycle! \nShe will talk about her travel experiences\, showing scenes and people along the way. This will be followed by her stitching of Kevin Roche live-over-Zoom from her home in London.  All of this is pretty fascinating to watch!  Some of her stitching is shown below. Note that this meeting is a little longer\, extended to 1:00. \n\n  \n Originally Harriet was scheduled long ago to present last October.  But a happy pregnancy ensued\, with an expected delivery date just a few days prior to our PenWAG meeting.  She offered to meet the original commitment – unbelievable! – but we agreed to reschedule.  She is now the mother of two sons\, 3 years old and miniature. \n$10.00Read more

DESCRIPTION:April 11 – Karen Miller Zoom Webinar: Katazome Then and Now\nKatazome Then and Now \nKatazome\, the Japanese art of stencil dyeing\, has been the foundation of Karen’s textile practice for 30 years. Her work involves beautiful textile art with a general peacefulness and has been widely exhibited in shows worldwide\, most recently in two consecutive shows at Portland Japanese Garden. \nShe will present an overview of history and her approach. Using her own hand cut stencils to apply a resist paste\, she produces fabric for art quilts as well as silk garments\, linen hangings and indigo dyed cottons. Interestingly\, she was a marine biologist studying Octopus oxygen binding proteins before becoming a well-known expert on Katazome. DESCRIPTION:April 11 – Karen Miller Zoom Workshop: Twist and Wrap Coat\nTwist and Wrap Coat \nKaren is leading us in a workshop that is unrelated to the Katazome. It is a fast and easy way to make a versatile and flattering lightweight flowing “coat” using 2 yards of fabric\, 2 seams\, and 2 hours of time. This requires just 2 yards of a fabric which is attractive from both sides\, and somewhat drapey. It need not be silk\, rayon works fine. She also suggests using challis\, pongee\, and various jacquards\, dyed\, painted\, ecoprinted or a commercial print. A serger can be helpful but is not essential. Looking at photos below will give you an idea of what this garment looks like. \n  \nAfter registering\, the unique pattern will be sent to you.
