SUMMARY:May 2025 Online Workshop | Karen Lukacs: The Alchemy of Remaking with Secondhand Materials
DESCRIPTION:Karen Lukacs: The Alchemy of Remaking with Secondhand Materials\nThe workshop demystifies Karen’s creative process in transforming pre-loved garments and notions into couture-quality\, one-of-a-kind works of art. It is an interactive zoom session where participants are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas on Reimagined Couture.  \nYou will go through the process of transforming a simple denim jacket into your own signature statement garment – your modern heirloom. Karen shares design inspiration and technical tips from her experimentations in deconstructing denim and attaching layers. She demystifies the pattern process and easy ways to skillfully attach your embellishments.  \n  \nBy workshop’s end\, you’ll know how to finish and care for your one-of-a-kind\, transformed jacket.  \n  \n  \nMATERIALS LIST:  \n\nUnlined trucker jacket or similar garment from your wardrobe \nLight weight 2-sided fusible web. \n\n                 Recommended: Pellon #EZ2L212 EZ Steam II Lite Two-Sided Fusible Web.  \n\nScissors both fabric and paper \nSeam ripper \nPattern paper: any lightweight paper that you can lay onto the jacket and draw your \n\n                 pattern. Waxed freezer paper works well.  \n\nPencil/pen \nFabric glue \nPins substantial enough to go through the layers of fabric \nTextile embellishments: this is an important part of the experience. Bring what catches \n\n                your fancy\, what speaks to you and of you. Remnants\, tee shirt graphics\, trims\,  \n                stitchwork\, beading\, garments for lining…endless possibilities. Considering employing  \n                your own handwork samples. Options are endless\, but resources here are key.  \n\nSize #16 or denim needle and thread. \n\n  \nABOUT KAREN LUKACS \nTransforming reclaimed garments into limited edition collections of Artisanal Fashion \n  \nKaren Lukacs is a weaver\, sewist\, textile designer/maker with over 25 years of upcycling mastery. She elevates repurposing design to an art form\, often using denim. Inspired by the processes of fabric disassembly and reconstruction\, Karen’s artisanal fashion brings cast-off textiles back to life. From her studio in the Sonoran Desert\, she advocates for design as a solution to the negative excesses of the ever-growing fast fashion model. \n  \nDriven by a hierarchical\, zero-waste ethos\, Karen begins her Denim Collection with one-of-a-kind jackets created from discarded denim jeans. Construction remnants are then collaged and transformed into bags and pillows using technical skills in tandem with artistry. Sweaters and upholstery remnants become sturdy totes. She sees her work as a transformation of the old to the making of modern heirlooms with new stories yet to unfold.  An award-winning textile artist\, Karen’s work has been published and exhibited in galleries. She shares her experience and inventiveness through workshops\, lectures\, and her studio production.  \nAn virtual workshop via Zoom (will be recorded) \n\n$65/$45 members \nsold out.

SUMMARY:February 2025 Workshop | Kevin Roche: Lights\, Fabric\, Action!
DESCRIPTION:Kevin Roche: Lights\, Fabric\, Action!\n \nAdd lighting accents to your work \nAn in-person workshop plus simulcast (will be recorded) \nAn introduction to adding illumination and animation to your projects. \nThe options for adding light and animation to wearables and accessories have multiplied incredibly over the last decade. I will begin with a brief overview of the types of illumination one can add to a project\, with some notes on pros and cons for each. \nThe rest of the workshop will focus on a simple hands-on illumination project\, adding flexible LED strip lighting to a garment\, hat\, or other project. \nPre-assembled kits will be available for advance order only\, and a parts shopping list and assembly instructions will be provided for students willing to solder their own. \nWhat to bring: \n\nYour favorite hand-sewing needle(s) and thread: invisible\, white or black as appropriate\nan item to embellish with a ribbon of light: a hat\, basket\, jacket\, or something elsenote that the light strips are slightly springy\, so a project made of very lightweight fabric may pose challenges.\n\nLighting kit options for the workshop:\nPre-assembled LED strip kits will be available at a kit charge of $30\, payable at the workshop.Note: It will not be possible to mail out kits to remote attendees. Please use the “No Kit Wanted” option when signing up.Each Kit will include 1/2 meter (~20″) of one of two styles of glowing LED strip: Ribbon style\, which looks like a 3/8″ wide glowing ribbon when switched on\, or Piping style\, which is a 3/8″ wide strip which glows along one edge\, more like piping or neon. The kit will be pre-soldered with about 3 feet of cable ending in a USB-A style plug you can use with almost any USB power pack or charger. Please indicate your preference for the kit style before adding the workshop to your cart. Kit fees are to be paid to the instructor at the workshop.Orders placed after Jan 7 Jan 12 or with no preference will be built from available inventory\, and will probably be cool-white ribbon style.NOTE: Extended to Jan 12! \nRibbon style LED strip\nAs you can see in the illustration\, this kind of strip is flat and lights up across its width like a glowing ribbon \n\nPiping style LED strip\nThis kind of strip is the same width\, but most of the light comes out of one edge of the strip. This is more like piping\, and can be tucked into a fold to create the effect of a thin neon tube. Note that you cannot stitch through the strip like actual piping. It must be tucked into a fold or between layers of fabric so just the edge is exposed if you wish to hide the wider portion. \n\nLocation Saratoga Senior Center \n$65/$45 members $65.00Read more	\n \n \n

SUMMARY:February 2025 Simulcast | Jenny Ives (remote): No is not a word in my vocabulary\, aka Creativity in Sewing
DESCRIPTION:Jenny Ives (remote): \nNo is not a word in my vocabulary\, aka Creativity in Sewing \nFebruary 8\, 2025: 10:30-noon PST\nCampbell Community Center Multipurpose room M50 \nJenny Ives is a Costume designer out of Seattle\, WA. She got started sewing as a small child\, growing up in a sewing family it was in her blood. In high school\, she found her love of vintage clothing. That was a pipeline to starting costuming in the theater and her ballet studio. She loved helping to create a beautiful world on the stage! She started doing cosplay in 2013\, cosplay was a new way to build her creativity. She expanded her sewing techniques and was inspired by all the other creators. In 2015 she discovered her love for competing in Cosplay Contests. It lit a fire in her to try so many new things. Making friends with these competitors drove her to be her best\, and drove her to challenge herself. She started making her designs of Superhero ballgowns. But designing was never enough. From there it was how to take things to the next level. What new skills could she learn? It started small\, sewing in fairy lights to make something glow. Currently\, she is making fully articulated wings. There is always a new way to draw her creativity forward. \n  \nThis is an hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. SUMMARY:January 2025 Webinar | Jaki Canterbury: Slow Fiber The Beginning (Zoom Only)
DESCRIPTION:Jacki Canterbury Webinar Slow Fiber: The beginning\n \nUsing conceptual art to jump the divide from fast fashion to artfully living an authentic life in my closet. \n  \nWant to know something I think about a lot when I’m not sewing or running my business? How the emerging markets around the globe- India\, China\, Indochina\, South and Central America and they’re growing middle class are are onboarding consumption habits like ours. I know that shopping equals environmental degradation. How selfish of me\, right? Here in the west\, we got our chance\, they want theirs and while we’re thinking about how to undo 400 years of colonial\, environmental rape in the US those places are ramping up their buying.\nIn 2017\, being the intuitive\, creative\, self-employed\, self-starter I am\, I realized that there was a smoke screen in the fashion industry. It had me\, hook line and sinker up until then too. I was going to really have to change my ways if I wanted to be part of a solution. \n \nBut what was the solution? Do you just stop buying clothes? Not likely. Do you only buy used? Not realistic. Share?…yuck. Do we make them? Well\, we used to\, but again\, not realistic. This work-hard-play- hard-defend-your-American-productivity- to-the-end-world that we share with others is hard to change. I am part of that paradigm. \nWe are fiercely independent. We own our own everything. My art and my garment thinking have been intersecting ever since. \n  \n  \nJanuary 11\, 2024: 10:30-noon PST PenWAG Zoom webinar This is a Zoom webinar\, free to all active PenWAG members. Guests may join; a $10 contribution is requested to help defray our costs $10.00Read more

SUMMARY:December 2024 Simulcast | Carol Ziogas: Stitching the Sky
DESCRIPTION:December 2024 Simulcast | Carol Ziogas: Stitching the Sky\n\nStitching the Sky – History of Sashiko in pre 20th century Japan \nCarol Ziogas has been collecting vintage Japanese kimonos for more than 20 years ago.  She enriched her knowledge with extensive research\, learning the history\, and developing a love of traditional Japanese stitching.  Carol’s presentation will include a display of 19th and 20th century Japanese textiles including indigo\, shibori\, katazome\, kimono\, and sashiko pieces. \nIn Japan\, sashiko stitching was first applied to clothing out of a practical need and would have been used to strengthen the homespun clothes of the time.  Worn out clothes were pieced together to make new garments by using simple running stitches. After these garments wore out\, they would been used to layer thin fabrics to create warmth\, and\, in the case of some garments such as the coats of firemen\, to create a thick and absorbent material that would be soaked in water before carrying out duties as a fireman. \nCarol lives in Alameda\, CA and owns Kimonomomo\, which specializes in new and vintage Japanese textiles and sashiko supplies\, on Etsy. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n sashiko-sun\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n sashiko_grid_2\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \nDecember 14\, 2024: 10:30-noon PST\nSaratoga Senior Center \n19655 Allendale Avenue\, Saratoga\, CA 95070\n(Park at Civic Center) \nThis is a hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $10 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$10.00Read more	\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:October 2024 Webinar| Christine Barnes: Color Your Wearable Art (Zoom Only)
DESCRIPTION:October 2024 Webinar| Christine Barnes: Color Your Wearable Art (Zoom Only)\nOctober 12\, 10:30AM-noon\, PDT\n“Color theory” for wearable art? Sounds a bit academic\, but there are classic color combination concepts that you can consciously apply to your fabric choices when planning a garment. The key is in the basics: how light or dark a color is (value)\, how warm or cool (visual temperature)\, and how bright or dull (intensity). And with the color wheel\, an amazing tool for wearable artists and quilters alike\, you will see new possibilities for creative color combinations. Of course\, color usually involves pattern and texture\, so we’ll include those de-sign elements in the conversation\, too. Come see-and take the color challenge!\nChristine’s quilting life began when she was eight or nine\, making a doll quilt on her crank Singer sewing machine. She asked her grandmother what was inside a quilt\, and she said “cotton.” Christine stuffed her little quilt with cotton balls—and wondered why it was lumpy! But she perse-vered and learned to sew clothing and more quilts. After college she worked at Sunset Publishing\, wrote the book\, Quilting\, Patchwork & Appliqué\, and other book chapters on color theory. Christine has spent many years teaching color theory to quilters and publishes a newsletter called Christine’s Color Connection \n  \nThis is a Zoom Webinar simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $10 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$10.00Read more	\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
