SUMMARY:February 10\, 2024 Webinar: April Sproule -- New Directions in Mixed Media Textiles
DESCRIPTION:April Sproule: New Directions in Mixed Media Textile Arts \nIn this lively and engaged presentation\, April Sproule will share some of her latest work that includes many of her Japanese Boro Inspired Stitched textile art pieces. Over the past few years\, April has fallen in love with the process of combining fabric and paper with hand stitching used in innovative new ways. \nAs she shares her techniques with you\, you’ll also see examples of the incredibly helpful sample books she creates for documenting her work. A short tutorial on the simple process she uses for making these books is included so you can make your own later using very basic materials. \nThe cyanotype process for printing on fabric rounds out this event as you see how quickly you can master this beautiful art form with no experience whatsoever. Always inspired by nature\, April discovered this was a perfect way to use the plants she loves that surround her home. April freely shares information about her art\, so there will be plenty of time for questions and answers. \nApril Sproule is an artist whose medium is textiles. She has a great love of design and the many ways it can be used to enrich our lives. She has been creating with fiber since she was old enough to hold a needle. April’s her early professional training was at the San Francisco School of Fashion Design\, and she continued her education by studying textiles\, art\, and business.  She has been a full-time studio artist at Sproule Studios for many years and enjoys experimenting with several mediums including painting\, printing\, machine stitching\, and contemporary hand embroidery. She is inspired by the diversity found in nature: flora\, fauna\, and microscopic imagery. \nThis is an online-only Zoom Webinar\, free to all active PenWAG members.\nGuests may join; a $5 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$5.00Read more	\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:February 10\, 2024: Zoom Workshop | April Sproule: Japanese Boro\, Mending in Mind
DESCRIPTION:An online (Zoom) workshop on Boro techniques with April Sproule. \nIn 19th century Japan\, textiles were a valued commodity. Japanese Boro Stitching originated then as a way for people to extend the life of their worn-out textiles by repurposing them into things like floor coverings\, clothing\, and bed coverings. The worn fabrics scraps were held together using small stitches known as Boro Stitching. \nThe emphasis in this workshop will be on the hand stitching and how to create dynamic contrast using different textures and patterns. The stitching and the innovative use of beautiful papers along with the fabrics gives this work a very unique look. \nThose fabrics or scraps you’ve saved to use for “something special” will be perfect for this project. Now is a great time to raid your stash and make something wonderful with those treasures. You will make a small scroll or wall hanging\, approximately 9” x 18”. \nYou will be captivated by the Boro Stitching process as the beauty of your stitches and the feel of the texture magically begin to emerge on your cloth. Becoming immersed in the stitching\, you’ll soon discover the calming effect of this lovely practice. All your stitching will be done by hand without an embroidery hoop. \nThis workshop is suitable for all skill levels. \nWe will cover: \n\nColor and design options\nWorkflow and construction techniques for hand piecing\nFinishing ideas for your scroll\, and a PDF of the Slideshow used in class\n\nYou will learn: \n\nHand embroidery without a hoop on fabric and paper\nA variety of mending and decorative stitches\nDevelopment of different patterns using basic stitches\n\nBoro\, Mending_Student’s Supply List \n$65 ($45 for PenWAG members) \n$65.00Read more

SUMMARY:April 13 Simulcast | Harriete Berman: Prestige\, Value\, and Identity
DESCRIPTION:Harriete Berman: Prestige\, Value\, and Identity\nHarriete Estel Berman has been creating jewelry from post-consumer tin cans since 1988\, transforming mundane materials from the refuse of our consumer society into meaningful layers of social commentary. \nFamiliar images and patterns ranging from bar codes to brand name icons are ironically metamorphosed in her bracelets\, pins\, and earrings.  They explore the seduction of advertising and marketing that promotes brand recognition and loyalty as personal identification.  These materials are not as precious as gold or silver\, but in many ways reflect more accurately the values of our culture. \nIn the past few years\, Berman has expanded her repertoire of materials to use post-consumer plastic as an extraordinary environmental statement creating imaginative jewelry from even more unexpected materials. \nBerman’s jewelry was recently featured in a PBS program produced by Craft In America titled\, “Jewelry”.  \nThis is an hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $5 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$5.00Read more	\n \n \n

SUMMARY:October 2024 Webinar| Christine Barnes: Color Your Wearable Art (Zoom Only)
DESCRIPTION:October 2024 Webinar| Christine Barnes: Color Your Wearable Art (Zoom Only)\nOctober 12\, 10:30AM-noon\, PDT\n“Color theory” for wearable art? Sounds a bit academic\, but there are classic color combination concepts that you can consciously apply to your fabric choices when planning a garment. The key is in the basics: how light or dark a color is (value)\, how warm or cool (visual temperature)\, and how bright or dull (intensity). And with the color wheel\, an amazing tool for wearable artists and quilters alike\, you will see new possibilities for creative color combinations. Of course\, color usually involves pattern and texture\, so we’ll include those de-sign elements in the conversation\, too. Come see-and take the color challenge!\nChristine’s quilting life began when she was eight or nine\, making a doll quilt on her crank Singer sewing machine. She asked her grandmother what was inside a quilt\, and she said “cotton.” Christine stuffed her little quilt with cotton balls—and wondered why it was lumpy! But she perse-vered and learned to sew clothing and more quilts. After college she worked at Sunset Publishing\, wrote the book\, Quilting\, Patchwork & Appliqué\, and other book chapters on color theory. Christine has spent many years teaching color theory to quilters and publishes a newsletter called Christine’s Color Connection \n  \nThis is a Zoom Webinar simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $10 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$10.00Read more	\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:December 2024 Simulcast | Carol Ziogas: Stitching the Sky
DESCRIPTION:December 2024 Simulcast | Carol Ziogas: Stitching the Sky\n\nStitching the Sky – History of Sashiko in pre 20th century Japan \nCarol Ziogas has been collecting vintage Japanese kimonos for more than 20 years ago.  She enriched her knowledge with extensive research\, learning the history\, and developing a love of traditional Japanese stitching.  Carol’s presentation will include a display of 19th and 20th century Japanese textiles including indigo\, shibori\, katazome\, kimono\, and sashiko pieces. \nIn Japan\, sashiko stitching was first applied to clothing out of a practical need and would have been used to strengthen the homespun clothes of the time.  Worn out clothes were pieced together to make new garments by using simple running stitches. After these garments wore out\, they would been used to layer thin fabrics to create warmth\, and\, in the case of some garments such as the coats of firemen\, to create a thick and absorbent material that would be soaked in water before carrying out duties as a fireman. \nCarol lives in Alameda\, CA and owns Kimonomomo\, which specializes in new and vintage Japanese textiles and sashiko supplies\, on Etsy. \n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n sashiko-sun\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n sashiko_grid_2\n \n \n \n \n	\n\n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n	\n	\n\n\n\n \nDecember 14\, 2024: 10:30-noon PST\nSaratoga Senior Center \n19655 Allendale Avenue\, Saratoga\, CA 95070\n(Park at Civic Center) \nThis is a hybrid seminar and Zoom simulcast\, free to all active PenWAG members. \nGuests may join; a $10 contribution is requested to help defray our costs \n$10.00Read more	\n \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:January 2025 Webinar | Jaki Canterbury: Slow Fiber The Beginning (Zoom Only)
DESCRIPTION:Jacki Canterbury Webinar Slow Fiber: The beginning\n \nUsing conceptual art to jump the divide from fast fashion to artfully living an authentic life in my closet. \n  \nWant to know something I think about a lot when I’m not sewing or running my business? How the emerging markets around the globe- India\, China\, Indochina\, South and Central America and they’re growing middle class are are onboarding consumption habits like ours. I know that shopping equals environmental degradation. How selfish of me\, right? Here in the west\, we got our chance\, they want theirs and while we’re thinking about how to undo 400 years of colonial\, environmental rape in the US those places are ramping up their buying.\nIn 2017\, being the intuitive\, creative\, self-employed\, self-starter I am\, I realized that there was a smoke screen in the fashion industry. It had me\, hook line and sinker up until then too. I was going to really have to change my ways if I wanted to be part of a solution. \n \nBut what was the solution? Do you just stop buying clothes? Not likely. Do you only buy used? Not realistic. Share?…yuck. Do we make them? Well\, we used to\, but again\, not realistic. This work-hard-play- hard-defend-your-American-productivity- to-the-end-world that we share with others is hard to change. I am part of that paradigm. \nWe are fiercely independent. We own our own everything. My art and my garment thinking have been intersecting ever since. \n  \n  \nJanuary 11\, 2024: 10:30-noon PST PenWAG Zoom webinar This is a Zoom webinar\, free to all active PenWAG members.
