SUMMARY:September 11\, 2021 FREE Online Workshop | Becka Rahn: Designing Kaleidoscope Geometrics
DESCRIPTION:September 11\, 2021 FREE Online Workshop | Becka Rahn: Designing Kaleidoscope Geometrics \nThis event is now free to members and non-members alike! \nGet a taste of what it is like to digitally design and print your own fabric with Spoonflower. This session focuses on abstract designs\, so you don’t need to feel limited by your drawing skills. We’ll start with simple hands-on art\, transform it into pixels\, and create two seamlessly repeating geometric patterns all in one session. No special software or computer skills are required; you can create amazing patterns using just your web browser and some simple design tools. For the virtual version of this class\, because it’s not practical to watch a Zoom session and follow along with the online part of projects in real-time\, this session will be presented as an interactive demo with hands-on components\, handouts and links to refer to later\, plus lots of opportunities to ask questions. \nNo fabric design experience necessary\, but you should be comfortable with basic computer skills like opening and saving a file\, copy/paste. You do not need Photoshop or any special software or equipment. \nSupply list: We will do a couple of small hands-on activities in this class. Please have a small handful of colored papers\, a pair of scissors\, and a gluestick or double sided tape. You can use ANY kind of paper in any colors. Recycled is the best: magazine pages\, wrapping paper\, birthday card envelopes\, junk mail\, scrapbooking paper\, construction paper\, paint chips\, handpainted. It can have patterns\, textures or words on it.  \nBecka Rahn is a full-time teaching artist and fabric designer who works in a micro-studio in Minneapolis. Becka works primarily in fabric and paper\, specializing in textured designs from cut paper illustrations using recycled papers. She creates surface designs for fabric that she uses to make art pieces for gallery exhibitions\, functional items to sell in her Etsy shops\, and fabrics that you can buy to make your own projects. She is the co-author of The Spoonflower Handbook\, a guide to designing your own fabrics. She has received awards for her work from Jerome and McKnight Foundations\, MN State Arts Board\, and Fiber Art Now magazine. She is an active teaching artist in her community and online. She is passionate about helping artists conquer technology barriers to make their work more accessible. SUMMARY:August 14\, 2021: A Behind the Scenes Tour with Charlotte Kruk
DESCRIPTION:August 14\, 2021: A Behind the Scenes Tour with Charlotte Kruk \nCharlotte Kruk is known for her sculptural garments and accessories made from candy and food wrappers.  How does she magically transform these unusual materials into works of art?  Join us for a peek at the magic behind the curtain! \nCharlotte is currently exhibiting with “Pivot” through “Curated by the Sea” in Santa Cruz September 2-October 30.  Exhibiting runway/performance event with “Pivot” at the “Rio Theatre” in Santa Cruz on September 25. Kruk has been working as a High School Sculpture Arts teacher at Lynbrook in San Jose for the last 24 years and moonlighting as a professional artist.     \n  \n  \n\nGenuinely purchased\, meticulously unwrapped\, consumed\, and conscientiously collated\, each wrapper is carefully stitched side by side to create new textiles\, which beg to be evaluated…scrutinized. These wearable sculptures are designed to “slyly wink” at a culture that often compares women\, particularly well-dressed women\, to decorations\, consumables\, “eye candy”. Initiating dialogue on packaging\, brand association\, and power structure\, these sculptures also direct a commentary on the gluttony and wastefulness of a disposable\, packaged society. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThis program is free to all 2021 Active PenWAG members; registration and login information will be sent via electronic communications.\nNon-members may register to attend for a $5 contribution\, which may be paid via our online enrollment store. SUMMARY:June 13\, 2021 | SUNDAY | Caroline Nixon online Botanical Print Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a special workshop in two parts. The first\, pre-recorded 90 minutes will be available one week in advance. The second\, live\, portion is  a SUNDAY  morning workshop\nFYI – If you are a member of Stitch Club then you already have access to a very similar program of Caroline’s. She says there are some differences but you may want to consider if you want to do both. \nCaroline Nixon is a textile artist. She works with natural dyes and botanical contact printing ( ecoprinting) to produce wearable art\, wall art and home textiles. Working from her garden studio in long Compton\, she captures the beauty of nature using the pigments and imprints of the leaves themselves – no synthetic ink\, dyes or silk screens are involved. Hand and free machine stitch are used for embellishment\, producing complex patterned cloth. The naturally occurring colours are soft and harmonious\, and the process is non polluting and respectful of the environment.\nThe plants and dyes come from sustainable sources – many are grown in her own garden. The small-est change in plant species\, climatic conditions or water source can produce marked variations in the prints\, meaning every item is unique. The textiles used are natural fibres\, organically produced and ethically sourced wherever possible. Vintage textiles are also upcycled\, giving them a new lease of life. Much of the linen and lace is sourced from French brocantes and local charity shops. The cooking pots used for processing are also recycled – copper preserving pans\, cast iron laundry pots\, alumini-um cooking pots. All these techniques are the antithesis of today’s ‘throwaway’ society \n  \n  \nshop \n

SUMMARY:May 8\, 2021 Online Meeting and Program - Diane Ericson
DESCRIPTION:May 8\, 2021 — Diane Ericson \nOnline Program: Making a Life by Hand \nMAKING a Meaningful Life- Aging with a creative taproot and harvesting the gifts that continue unfolding in front of us\, IS life offering itself to us. How to be ready? Re-tooling our creativity can open the way: Join me to share ideas\, strategies and inspiration for the the journey.  \n  \n\nMaking a Life by Hand     \nDescription: Living my life rooted in creativity has never been more tested than in my recent past. Making meaning has always been what I require no matter what is in my hands. Making to understand the world. Making to grow my experience and skills and find balance is what my  life is always about. The deeper I reach\, the richer my life is. Having a diverse toolbox of making skills allows me to create choices that speak to what I need and want to share in the moment: Sometimes a more structured material like wood…sometimes textile…each calling me home in a unique voice. The gift of creativity is a bridge I am passionate to make in teaching and sharing with others. I look forward to sharing my process and work with you.  Everything coming and going…life is always in motion…feeling change in me now reminds me there is always magic unfolding in what is next. I am awake\, happy ….and always grateful.
