Description

Pants are the most challenging garment when it comes to perfecting fit. A perfect fit starts with accurate measurements. Kathryn will guide participants through the process of taking a complete set of measurements. Participants will receive a copy of Kathryn’s measurement chart. Not everyone fits into the size range of commercial patterns. Kathryn has devised a technique for grading multi size patterns up or down. This technique can be used for those who are larger or smaller than commercial patterns. Grading can also be used for those who wear a larger size on top or bottom and only have a pattern in one size range. Not to be confused with pattern alteration, grading will resize a pattern to get you into the right sized pattern. From there, the pattern can be altered for a personalized fit.

Focusing on pants, Kathryn will discuss techniques for common pattern alterations. Students will alter a commercial pattern according to their personal measurements and figure requirements. We will then sew up the altered pattern in cotton muslin to evaluate the fit and make adjustments. Learn how to ‘read the wrinkles’ and alter a muslin fitting garment. Kathryn will demonstrate how to restyle your basic pant pattern by changing the leg width and length, adding pockets and a fly front. Time permitting we will sew a few samples of zippers and pockets to give your pants a professional look.
