Lecture: Textiles and Needlework

 

Internationally recognized designer, author, and instructor Marie Yolande gives us an overview of couture, hand embroidery, and sewing from Western Europe. See artisans accomplishing masterpieces in the same manner passed from one generation to another. Peek inside their workrooms, glimpse at work displays, find out the historical background, and the future of needlework in Europe. A trunk show with a variety of items collected over the years will be displayed.

Saturday Workshop: The “Embroidery of France Ireland and Italy”

Create a small needle book to learn the basic Boutis Provencal embroidery technique. Hand stitch this small project while listening to the background of this French needle art dating from the 14th century. While the appearance is similar to trapunto, Boutis pieces are not cut to achieve the raised effect, and it is completely reversible. Participants will learn transfer a design, stitch, cord, and stuff the marked design for added dimension. Machine stitching techniques will be demonstrated.

Sunday Workshop: On The Edge

Learn edge finishes that blend traditional French Couture techniques plus quick and innovative ready-to-wear methods. Don’t limit yourself to the trims available in stores. Learn how to create a Chanel type trim to blend with your fabrics, make flawless piping and bias trims using a simple technique used in Parisian Couture houses. These techniques can be incorporated into your costuming and wearable art. Be your own designer and go from ho-hum to va-va voom while creating your own personal edges.
