We have a choice of two projects
For each item that you donate, you will get one entry into a drawing for a prize.
Ryan’s Case for Smiles is a national organization that sews pillowcases to donate to children in hospitals undergoing cancer treatment. We have a local chapter in the San Francisco Bay area but there are chapters in other areas of the United States. You can check their website for a chapter in your area. https://caseforsmiles.org. They have a goal to collect 40,000 pillowcases in the month of September, one for every child in cancer treatment. Let’s contribute to that goal.

What kind of fabric can I use to sew pillowcases?
- Fabric needs to be 100% cotton, no flannel, no fabric with glitter.
- Prewash fabric, do not use scented detergent or dryer sheets
- Remember to use fun, colorful novelty prints!
- Include a note with your name and address so Ryan’s Case for Smiles can thank you
A second choice is to make a SHIB or shirt bib from an upcycled shirt. These are used to create a dignified way for elderly and dementia patients to protect their clothing during meals. When an adult is wearing a Shib, it looks as though they have on a regular shirt.

What do I need to make a Shib?
A man’s shirt or ladies’ blouse with a button front closure, larger is better
- A piece of tee shirt fabric or flannel to line the front
- Bias tape to coordinate, or you can make your own bias from the shirt back, or you can make a rolled hem on the edges
- Zipper foot
- Buttons, snaps, or small strip of Velcro to fasten the back yoke
Completed pillowcases and Shibs will be collected by Mary Reynolds and Claire DeLucchi. Bring them to the September Stash Exchange or contact us for mailing instructions.
