Lecture: Pattern Play, Human Algorithms, And Block Printing
Blocking printing, an ancient method for reproducing patterns on cloth, is modular and additive. Coupled with transparent dyes that can be layered, block printing has the capacity for endless variation even with repetition. Miriam Dym will share her insights into the fabulousness of block printing with a focus on algorithms, human feedback loops, and play as work.

Workshop: Block Print And Play With Patterns!
The workshop begins with a brief demonstration and instructions on printing. Printing tools will be found objects and some “official” printing blocks. Class participants will create their own prints on cloth. Using dyes prepared to print, participants can layer colors and shapes. The goal is to find out where our patterns take us, have fun, and see if making a mess gives good results.
