Jacki Canterbury Webinar Slow Fiber: The beginning
Using conceptual art to jump the divide from fast fashion to artfully living an authentic life in my closet.
Want to know something I think about a lot when I’m not sewing or running my business? How the emerging markets around the globe- India, China, Indochina, South and Central America and they’re growing middle class are are onboarding consumption habits like ours. I know that shopping equals environmental degradation. How selfish of me, right? Here in the west, we got our chance, they want theirs and while we’re thinking about how to undo 400 years of colonial, environmental rape in the US those places are ramping up their buying.
In 2017, being the intuitive, creative, self-employed, self-starter I am, I realized that there was a smoke screen in the fashion industry. It had me, hook line and sinker up until then too. I was going to really have to change my ways if I wanted to be part of a solution.
But what was the solution? Do you just stop buying clothes? Not likely. Do you only buy used? Not realistic. Share?…yuck. Do we make them? Well, we used to, but again, not realistic. This work-hard-play- hard-defend-your-American- productivity- to-the-end-world that we share with others is hard to change. I am part of that paradigm.
We are fiercely independent. We own our own everything. My art and my garment thinking have been intersecting ever since.
