Rust Dyeing Scarf Workshop
Rust is another name for iron oxide, which occurs when iron or an alloy that contains iron, like steel, is exposed to oxygen and moisture for a period of time. In this mini workshop we will take small pre-rusted metal pieces and dye print onto ribbon, vintage Quaker lace pieces and fabric strips using electric steamers. The pieces we create will be used to embellish hand dyed or natural un-dyed scarves.
While our fabric pieces are being steamed I will talk about other rust dyeing techniques, how to rust metal and demo them for you.
When the rust dyed fabrics are ready we will wash and rinse them, then dry them with either a heat tool and by ironing.
There is a kit fee of $25. Each student will get a pre-dyed or natural silk scarf length fabric (your choice) to applique the rust dyed pieces onto using hand stitching.
There is a limit of 15 students for this workshop!
Supplies to bring:
- Scissors
- I will provide disposable aprons and gloves, if you want different then you should bring them
- Straight pins to attach fabrics pieces onto the scarf length or temporary glue stick
- Other embellishments you might want to add to scarf, buttons, ribbon, etc.
- Embroidery threads and needles
