November 12, 2022 — Amber Young In-Person Workshop: Make a Swing Coat from Vintage Linens

Amber will be leading a workshop on how to make a simple swing coat from vintage linens. Suitable textiles: the linens need to be large/ or a couple that have a similar weight and complementary design. Embroidered tablecloths, vintage ticking, lightweight upholstery cottons, a few of your favorite buttons and adornment scraps, such as vintage hankies or heavy-duty lace.

THIS WORKOUT IS NOW SOLD OUT.

Note: the virtual simulcast portion of this workshop may be cancelled if the technical complexity of coordinating it with the live hands-on class requires. Attendees will be notified well in advance if this is the case.

Amber used a 60” x 80” madeira linen tablecloth for this piece.
Materials and Tools:
The linens need to be large or a couple with similar weight and complementary design. Embroidered tablecloths, vintage ticking, lightweight upholstery cottons, and add a few of your favorite buttons and adornment scraps, such as vintage hankies or heavy-duty lace. Amber will have a limited number of linens for sale. eBay is a good resource, Etsy also. The tablecloth Amber used in the sample garment was 60” by 80”. Of course, linens can be pieced together. Bring tools/supplies to pin and cut out pattern and sew if you would like to start assembly. Note: unlikely to finish garment in time allotted.
Pattern:
Note: We had thought we could have you alter a vintage pattern and there are not enough copies on the market for all of us.
Amber will provide patterns (no written instructions) for a kit fee of $20, payable in cash in class. Please email her your size preference ASAP, by Nov. 1 at latest. amberyoung@raggedthistle.com
Instruction:
Be sure not to miss Amber’s morning trunk show for inspiration! In class she will show us how to lay out the pattern to utilize the fantastic edges on the vintage linens. We will cut out our pieces under her guidance. The class is 4 hours long. You will have a chance to sew on the garment if you bring your serger or sewing machine. If not using a serger, consider what type of seam finish you would like to use, pinking shears, French seams, etc. Be aware that there may not be time to finish your garment.
